okay so basically I'm looking to get a new web host to transfer my site and all that goes with it to. don't get me wrong the bandwidth, storage and e-mail count I get with 1and1 is great but their service is kinda crappy, I canceled one of my domains like 4 years ago and found out last time it renewed when I actually paid mind to my credit card which was around october that I was still being billed for a domain I was no longer supposed to have. which I'm like okay I'm annoyed now and proceed to e-mail them and to which they tell me it will be taken care of....okay now I log into my admin panel and find a notice for another that I decided I want to get rid of cause I don't use it and guess what's still sitting in my domain pile...yep the domain that was supposedly taken care of, so now I'm bordering pissed off because between the fact of being lied to at least once the fail system that cause the whole mess from the start is screwing me again with the new cancellation.
okies so like if anyone knows if theres a service that can compare to mine which allows me 120 gigs of storage, 1200 e-mails *not really needed but meh* and not really sure what my bandwidth is these days but I'm pretty sure my package is the same as fusionmods or close to it anyway. I'm so done with jumping through hoops. also I'm paying $64 a year for my hosting and would like a comparable price.
I can ask around a few of my other web dev friends, but I've really considered moving to hostgator a few times. Their services are pretty comparable for the money, but their support is pretty timely, and they actually know what they're doing. My last employer used them almost exclusively. We had a primary dedicated account, and a number of shared hosting accounts for clients. The most frequent thing I had to contact them over.... I'd need a specific library for PHP enabled. Even though it was installed on the server, it wasn't added to the php extensions, so php didn't know it existed, which was pretty minor. The only big issue I ever had with them was our dedicated server was down once, so they have an email to contact directly over these issues... Well the email I contacted them with wasn't one on the hosting account, so they just shot back with, "sorry, we don't recognize this email". Made me mad that they didn't check that the server was down anyways... but aside from that one thing, i've had nothing but good experiences with them.
Also for domains... It's convenient to get them through the host, but if you're feeling bold enough to do a transfer, godaddy.com gives you just about every option you could imagine for domains. and it's easy to point it to your account anywhere else. They'll give you two namespace addresses and you just point those towards your web server.
I'll still ask around. I had one friend who I know what just talking about a host that he was excited to try out.
If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?
cools will have to look into hostgator, mind you I think I will e-mail them if I use them and have them enable the php stuff from the start since my site and forum are pretty heavily php based. as for godaddy I used them for my original domain host and got screwed out of my original .com address for my site so I'm gonna avoid them. I like the amenities of my current account but I really don't want to go through anymore hoops with them and it seems anytime I have to contact them over something that I'm going to have to do so every time.
my last run in with 1and1 was a while back, it looked like this server was down, so I shot them a few emails... Well 5 hours later, I get an email that says, "it looks fine to me right now". I was so mad from reading that! I just responded with, "Thanks for checking, it's good to hear that the site is working 5 hours after I contacted you". I mean what's the point after waiting for 5 hours?
If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?
yea it's kinda like dealing with the technologically retarded you have to deal with in an IT environment, or I could compare it to vista's constant are you sure security feature, like how many times do you have to say yes before things actually get done. lol
nah I really don't need quite that much, I'm only currently using 100 megs of it. it is nice though lol my site software currently consists of wordpress 3.1 and smf 2.0 RC5 for the forums. honestly though I pretty much have my forums closed on the registration side. I didn't get a whack of spam on it but I disabled all permissions for the default member status and created a separate group I have to set users to so they can do anything. had to get a capcha for the main site cause after neglecting it for as long as I did I had to go through over 400 spam comments and about another 75 that didn't get filtered and about 20 odd pages of spam accounts. lol
I could offer you free hosting on my server, if you can keep your overall space needs down to 5 GB. I am using Windows 2008 Server. I could also give you ftp access, if you promise not to upload any questionable code. Email accounts are no problem. If you need Outlook support, than I require a static IP on your end, otherwise I forward to whatever web mail account of your choice.
I have Comcast business class. I have a point to point fibre connection.
You can test these few sites to see if it meets your requirements.
I do data back up every 24 hours, 36 hours and once a week.
currently pondering it, it would make a nice temporary solution though I would still be looking for another host in the meantime, also the other thing would be where to move my current domains to that isn't either 1and1 or godaddy *had a bad experience with them*.
I use resell.biz, but they are no longer accepting new customers. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with GoDaddy.com. Whatever registrar you use, you need to be able to resolve your domain to an IP, as I don't have my own DNS servers. I found they were a big hassle, and most registrars are trying to secure all of their look-ups.
No rush unless you really need more space. I'm currently hosting 36 sites and all of them combined come to 4.5 GB of used space.
Let me know if you are interested.
their responses are aiming blame towards me when their own systems a piece of crap, just sent them a not so nice e-mail. as for my site I'm backing it all up right now and probably going to take it down for now. I really don't want to use them but godaddy might be my only decent option at the moment.
okay so other then I had to contact 1and1 and put in a help ticket with godaddy about getting the authorization codes for completing the transfers of my domains, things are on their way to getting done, my site is backed up an torn down from 1and1. as for hosting it I would need ftp access and only other thing would maybe be access to my databases or at least connection info for my site software to connect to it for use and possibly upgrades every so often. as for anything malicious I wouldn't worry I use only addons and plugins for my site software that comes from their own sites/sources.
Are you using GoDaddy for your domain registrar, or someone who can build DNS records allowing you to input a destination IP?
Figure we make sure all of that stuff is squared away, so we don't start troubleshooting what might be wrong on their end.
Basically need a @ record which is the end for the site and a mail record to direct all of your mail. I would like to call you and have a conversation over the phone, so we get off on the right foot. What does your schedule look like?
yea I'm using godaddy, didn't really want to but I have no idea who else to go through, figured out the problem though, the registration was set to private so the auth e-mails were hitting a proxy. bcmodding.net is currently in the transfer process. as for my schedule, I mean if your talking like when I'm up I kinda vary though I'm more of a night person I tend to be up by noon to 2pm my time which is central saskatchewan time.
