Post Subject: why do you use FireFox?
Posted on: Oct 15, 2007
Now I know the majority of people on this site use FireFox and after readying an article that talks about a somewhat angry person who can't access every single site using FF I wanted to know why you guys use it?
I've found that FF is far less effecient. Spend a day browsing in both IE and FireFox and compare the memory usage. Both use tabs. IE also handles client side scripting far better in my experience. Both have tabbed browsing. The only down side I see to IE is that it doesn't allow all the plugins, but honestly thats something I've lived without.
The internet at large is still using IE as a majority. The simple reason behind this is that it comes with windows and a lot of people don't care enough to switch over. Due to difference in browsers, and things that haven't been very standardized, this is why you find sites made for IE (since it's the majority). Some areas that react differently in borswers are CSS, JavaScript, and even different HTML attributes. I've even seen slight differences in the way that variables are passed on different browsers. Generally this stuff isn't a big deal but then you need applications such on AJAX and that can change everything as it relies on JS in most cases.
Personally I use both and don't really have any preference. But I'd like to hear everyone elses reasoning. If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?
So if IE has addons and custom search engine settings, what one would you prefer? lol I've heard the addon arguement a lot, I'm actually a bit suprised that IE hasn't added this ability yet. Though since IE is so tied into the rest of windows it may not be to easy to do it without noticable security risks

I use firefox for customizations... In spite of the fact that I hate programming in java and cs I do like that I can actually tell it individual settings for such minuscule things as how to load a specific page a special way because that is how I want to view it and not how the browser thinks it should be viewed. I also like the way that it saves passwords and logins for different websites.
I'm a die hard IE user, I've tried just about everother browser out there at one time or another, but I always come back to IE. I've been using IE from the very start of the web and I've never had a problem with it, so why change is the way I look at it.
IE can burn in hell....thats just how I feel about it, I use FireFox cause it's non proprietary and open source along with it's extensions and tab browsing and in all honesty I have no probs with browsing speeds most often so it suites me just fine. as for the tab browsing system in IE it's totally redundant, I mean when you click on a link on a forum in IE6 it opens in a new window right? well it does in IE7 as well despite the tab browsing system unlike FireFox which opens said link in a new tab so to me the memory leak is tolerable enough for me to continue using FireFox over IE.
lol go big or go home. This has been pretty interesting. To me it seems like most peoples preference doesn't really have much to do with the functionality of the browser, just their preference of the company.
Personally I just use IE as it's set to my default and I never bothered change it but I do run both for testing purposes. The annoying companies really haven't standardized things across JS and CSS so it's a necessity. I don't test in safari or anything else, sorry guys. But definite'y anyone, let me know if you see some things out of the ordinary that you suspect are browser related.
I run stats on everything, and this site does have a slightly larger base of FF users so it's interesting to see what makes them go with what browser. I'd love to hear from some safari people and other less common browsers, why they use those.

well for me honestly not really, I mean for what I do net wise FireFox is more then functional enough and Ive tried other browsers aside from it like safari, opera and netscape and I keep coming back to it so meh it works.
I hate how opera users bask about FF's mem leak. I installed opera and as soon as I launched it, it was taking up 100megs >.<
Also it takes alot of configing to get it to be halfway decent. When ever i changed a song on my media keyboard, it would go down a page. Why does opera have to be configed for every key on my keyboard? >.<
Also you cant place toolbars the way you like em, thats crap.

actually yea that reminded me of that little quirk, when I was checking out Opera I noticed its memory usage was at the same level as FireFox....yea no room to point out FF's mem leak when opera uses as much.
Well, my current problem is Flash in IE.
If you view this link in IE, you don't get to see the flash. CLICK HERE
I know the workaround, but that would mean I would have to ask
Modshop.net to have certain scripts on their server and allow me more
coding ability within their system.
Most times you are allowed just the <object> tag.
I love Flash, obviously MS has something better to sell you.
