Post Subject: On the new site....
Posted on: Feb 24, 2011
After from suffering from some general burnout (and I'm still trying to shake the last lingering bit of it), the site is actually extremely close to being finished! lol this is definitely way way way behind the schedule I had hoped for, but the site has soooo much awesome new stuff on board for it that i think it'll be worth the wait. lol it's definitely more than just a new template, I've literally redeveloped the site from the ground up. Usually when I talk about planning for a site, i compare it to putting in the foundation for a house, but in this case, i feel like I've not just thought out the foundation, I've checked soil compositions, ground water levels, and future city developments, lol.
I'm looking to launch with a lot of the sites current features, but I'm extremely improving them. The news articles will be one of the most extended areas, allowing for themes and priorities on the news instead of the straight generic ordered by published date lists you see currently. News will now be sorted into categories, and the biggest news will be promoted accordingly :)
For the forum, I think this is where everyone will be the happiest. Instead of the current setup, everyone will be able to upload, manage, and publish images without leaving a thread. I personally love this idea since it's insanely convenient.
The Case Vote (btw, if anyone can think up a better name for that, lemme know!) - Entering your case to be rated will now be optional. If you just want to show it off without any criticism then you'll be able to do this! If instead you want to go head to head and see if your rig is the best, you can enable the rankings! But Wait, there's more! That boring cap on four images per case... that's gone! if you have a million images that you want to upload, you can!
Events - This will be similar to the articles, but now I'm going to make it so that articles can be tagged with a date, or events can be created independently. If you want to see what games are coming out at some point, or when the next big tech show is, you'll finally be able to :)
There's still a lot more that will be done, and some of it will be behind the scenes, or it'll be development that improves the site without a noticeable change, but there is a TON of improvements that I know you guys will LOVE.
As of this moment, I still have a little bit of the frame work to create, but I have the database designs created already and implementing them should be pretty easy to do. so I'm hoping to wrap up the development in one week, then the testing in the next week. After that the only thing that'll be holding me up is potential extra testing, and extra design, and then the lovely import scripts, lol. But I wanted to let you guys know that the site is still moving forward! If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?
the sad part is, I already have some ideas for the next site projects I want to take on. One of them will be related to the modding world, the other will be something random that I just want to try out.

sounds great. pace yourself my friend you know how they say the good die young? yeah this is how. lol cant wait to see what comes...
not sure if your a rocky horror fan but you killing me with antici .......................................................................................... .......................................................................................... .......................................................................................... ....................pation
i hope th enew site logs you out automatically when you close your browser and has the option to control what email notifications you get and um looks pretty =]
as of this moment... no plans having the site log you out with your browser or controlling email notifications. I have taken the notifications into mind though, and that'll be a post launch tweak. As of this moment I haven't really thought too much about the types of notifications. Additionally, with the level of change to the site, i think i'll want to wait till then to see what kinds of notifications will happen for sure. But like I said, this is something I've thought of, and will be adding simple check boxes in the account settings info that'll allow you to enable/disable your notifications, but that'll be after I launch the site.
One of the things I'm doing now is writing up some final check lists per page for the features i need to finish, and the ones that I want in place at the launch, and the ones that will be fine to do after the launch.
I'm really aiming to maintain a lot of the current functionality at the launch, but I mean that in the most generic meanings. Because it'll all be super revamped. The case vote, the forums, haha even private messaging.
Oh and I'm sure you guys will like this, one thing I'm planning as a post launch project, it making a mobile edition of the site as well :) Now that I finally have a smart phone, i'm kinda shocked at the number of sites that aren't mobile ready... whats with that!?

you asshole!
i was going to say you "slyfox" lmao... i was only tossing shit at you joikingly adding to aforementioned stress.... lol
buthow dare you appeal to my digital dependency and allow me to acces this site form my iphone... as if i dont dominate threads as it is........REALLY?
hahaha if it makes you feel any better, I'm not looking at making this place mobile for you at all, it's for me
It's still a down the line thing, but the way I've been developing this site, it wouldn't be too big of a task. it'd be more or less spending some time comparing screen sizes and phone capabilities

so this will be a post launch idea, but I'm kinda psyched because i just came up with a practical way to implement some site caching. There are a few areas of the site that I was a little worried about that could have a potential drag on load times because of the extent of what they're pulling all at once, and I have to say, I think I've just come up with a pretty elegant solution to it.
so I think it's official, I'm definitely a bit of a nerd, lol

So in my ongoing development, I wanted to get everyone's opinion... What is relevant info that might be in a user profile? Most forums have objects similar to this...
- Website
- Contact name for every instant messaging service ever
- job
- location
- ect
Facebook obviously asks for more personal info, you're school, relationship status, ect.
What info do you guys think would be worth having? A list I put together a long while ago reads these...
- Birthdate
- Gender
- Website
- Location
- ICQ, MSN, AIM, and YAhOO
- Sig
- Avatar
- Title
- Occupation
- Hobbies
Let me know what you guys think since I'm betting this list changes drastically ever single week
