Post Subject: Vega Strike Space Flight Sim
Posted on: May 6, 2009

Vega Strike is an open-source code heavily modded game, combining a couple of dinosaur space flight sims and mixing in some new code to make an unbelievably awesome game, especially considering these guys are scattered all over the globe, all have very busy RLs going on, and don't even all speak English of have reliable internet.
Most of the code seems to be from the dino-puter game Wing Commander that came out in the early '90's or so.
What I like about this game:
1>Very challenging, with realistic physics making docking a real challenge. To land on some of the asteroid bases, you have to actaully fly down a tunnel in the rock. Some of the missions call for you to rendezvous with a moving starship and dock with it...not for the faint of heart.
2>Awesome equipment and weapons customization. Diffferent types, sizes and grades of everything from armor to reactors to capacitors.
3>Diverse and believable trading economy...but it may not be such a great idea to let your kids play this game. Not only is the gameplay made for grownups looking for a real challenge, some of the products for sale are, ah risque...."Mommy, what's a pleasure borg?" Okay I could see a market for those with all those lonely horney spacemen stuck on all those boring asteroid bases with nowhere to go on a saturday nite...anyways back to the subject matter:
4>Even though the source code is ancient, they've managed to make it work with high end graphics, and it even WORKS WITH VISTA which is a remarkable achievement in and of itself....Vista seems to hate games.
5>Works with a joystick. You may have to do some hacking to get your buttons working the way you want since it doesn't have a joystick config built in, but they have instructions on how to set it up and people willing to help those of us who don't speak fluent geek
6>Also works with mouse flight if you don't have a joystick
7>Diverse missions ranging from 'cargo missions' to the old fashioned 'bounty' missions to patrols and even rescue missions.
8>Excellent user interface both inflight and while docked.
9>Engaging background story and open-ended roleplay.
10>MMO compatible, although they don't have a server running at the moment.

What I don't like about Vega Strike:
1>Some of the missions take forever. Sometimes the target runs away, and when they do it can take several minutes to chase them down again.
2>cheesy cartoonish semi-2D bar patrons...okay maybe I'm spoiled coming from a game like Freelancer where a multi-billionaire company can afford to pay thier coders to make the characters in the bar move around and stuff....
3>Some of the Jump Holes are simple wireframes.....again, hey its an all-volunteer operation.

If you want to check this game out for yourself, its a free download at:

The forums for Vega Strike are at:

and the people there are very friendly and helpful.

Vega Strike is also supported by the SWAT Portal, which is where I found this awesome free game under the Wing Commander page:
