this article actually has nothing to do with kids blinding themselves but I figure that title is enough of an advisory because little kids will probably at some point hurt themselves with this.
now down to business. this is a cool thing I just found on digg for what to do with your old dvd burners, and I imagine a CD burner would be the exact same (since I think the only difference is the abilitiy to make smaller increments, ie, more tracks), but this guy turned his mag light into a fun high power laser. nothing industrial, but it can make some heat.
heres the article. I'm going to try this out next chance I get.
yeah, now i have an old dvd burner but i also have a few old cd burners and i'm abou t90% sure they're the same with the exception of the increments. I know thats atleast the difference between a cdrom and a dvd rom becaus ei've seen hacks to set your cdrom to adjust at those smaller increments before

The dye on a dvd-r is a different color than the stuff on the cd-r so the laser might have to be hotter (as its a different dye) with a dvd rw drive but thats just a guess.
people are so damn stupid. "I'mma build one of these out of a blu-ray laser!!! YARRR BURN THE HOUSE DOWN!!!1!" Jesus christ let's go through wavelengths of light and translations of said wavelengths into heat. BLUE IS COLD, WHITE IS HOT. Why does the sun produce perfect white light but look yellow? BECAUSE IT'S FREAKING HOT. Blu-Ray runs on the principles of being able to write data at a lower temp and finer point. There's hacks to turn green pointers into burning lasers, and there's now lights for red. the wattage on green pointers starts out at almost 10mW so modding one of those to burn is quick and easy (dangerous) and requires blowing out a restricting diode through contact with a soldering gun... I hadn't thought of building a laser pointer from a DVD Burner. Good find Faceless, just keep using your head.
they only block ftp, so i'm thinking about whipping up a web based ftp substitute. it'll work perfectly fine since that doesn't use ftp protocols or ports, but at the same time it'll open a lot of potential security risks that i'd rather not even think of right now

As Jollyrgr from instructables said..."You need a DVD Burner for the full power covered here. I've seen this type of project before. A player only diode or a CD Burner won't cut it (sorry, no pun intended)."
Anyway, sick project, gonna do that at some point...
Yeah faceless, those faucet lights are actually how I re-plumbed my bathroom. SURE some of you will say "Putting the little copper mesh things back in the faucet heads would've done the same thing... but as faceless pointed out, THAT WOULDN'T HAVE FIXED IT with led's... heheh I'm a thinkgeek consumer whore.
