I just wanted to share this video on TED.com talking about how the internet was initially created to be a place for free speech and expression, and how that's pretty far from the truth now.

There's a lot of other specific topics it could cover, but this does give an excellent overview.
I think the one additional note I'd have included because of the size of it is that Microsoft had admitted that their EU Cloud Data could be pulled through Patriot Act Requests in the US.
