I'd like to write some more guides for the site, anyone have any requests? I plan to do a quick guide on turning a PSU into a test PSU with a switch to turn it on and off.

but after that i'm drawing blanks.

Post Subject: Yes faceless, got any wisdom on custom length and wrapp
Posted on: Apr 1, 2008

I'm interested in a modest cosmetic mod on the interior cables of my machine. Steps for wrapping the cable bundles I have, changing the connectors to all one custom color, and possibly assembling my own custom length cables for an unusual setup inside a mini atx tower( rom on ceiling and hard drive on floor) because retail ide cables are either way too long or ironically too short. I'd also like if possible to remove the unused cables from my power supply as I'm working with such a small case and know with confidence what components I will or will not be installing in this pc. I am a beginner but am very competent with a well written set of instructions. This was my first pc and after three weeks of study, one day of shopping, had my OS up and running just three hours after opening the first piece of hardware. Now it' time to tweek those looks and I'd appreciate whatever help you could give on these cable issues. Should you not be interested in writing any steps I'd still love a good link or source for cable wrapping steps and connection mods. Thanks!

The above link will take you to a How-To Make your own round cables. You can also do a power supply mod where you make your cables modular and then you plug in only the cables that you need. There is a guide here on this site on how to make your Power Supply Modular. It's in the Guides section. If you do that to your Power Supply then that will help you with your cable problem. Happy Modding to ya.

The only problem with that round cable mod is that the new 80 pin ide cables are nearly impossible to cut without severing a connection.

How I did it was A. I was careful and when I did accidentally slice it I never sliced all the way through the connection so it still worked. Then when ever I sliced through I always made sure I made the next cut lower down so it couldn't short circuit.

I've done both and never had a problem. When cutting thru you use a knife that won't cut the wire. I learned when in electrician mate school that you carry 2 knifes in your pocket. One to keep sharp and the other is to be dull. Use the dull one for working on electrical wiring. I have been carrying 2 knives in my pocket for 40 years now and it has paid off many times in my life. Happy Modding to ya.

I know of 2 different types of connections that come on cpu fans. So it would help to know which type you have. If you have a 4pin molex type then it's simple to just plug into one of the ps cables but if you are using one of the standard 3pin or 4pin motherboard connections then you will need to get a adapter so that you can plug into a 4pin molex. If you can't find a cable then you may need to make your own. I have had to do so myself for a P4 power cable. Good luck with what ever you do. Happy Modding to ya.

ketzyhi..,

thats one thing I'd advise against. It's completly do able but might cause a few problems. As far as the wiring, the cpu fan just has a ground, 12v and rpm sensor wires.

here's a diagram that I found on google and i've tested it's accuracy. If you're ever worried about the accuracy of a diagram you can back plug the molex connectors with a multi-meter while it's running just to confirm your results.

Now the reason I'd advise against this is if you entirely bypass the motherboard then depending on your bios it might freak out in different ways to not detecting a cpu fan. The easy way to avoid this is to just leave the sensor wire connected to the motherboard, but if you're going to do that then you might as well just leave the power and ground connected as well, unless it's for a very specific purpose. But as long as you can leave the sensor wire connected it won't freak out. Also depending on your motherboard you can probably disable the alarm for not detecting a cpu fan. But it's a nice thing to have in the event of a true failure. Hope that helped a bit. If you have any other questions on wiring and what-not feel free to ask away since this explination was pretty basic.

at wiring leds. aside from in plexi, which i think was covered wonderfully. i have a free standing pentagram on the front of my case and when i followed the walk through i burnt the leds out. i think i have to use some resistors. but i was just wondering if you could do a version with a bunch more pics so my "less educated behind" can actually figure it out. i dont think just wiring the leds is good. i need a grounded molex connection(3 wires) and a switch (easy) but maybe it would be a good addition to the how to already in place?

ps thanks for being so willing to listen and dedicating so much free time to educating ppl like me who would have to pay out the behind for basic information. i <3 this place.

just thought of a last second one :

interior design =] what paints are heat/electrical safe, what sound deadening materials are safe for heat. i plan to paint both interiors of my pcs and im scared if i use basic spray paint, i will always smell it. i am also afraid if i use auto paint (which can be professionally applied at my job) after its baked on the internal heat may cause it to flake off (and it stillmay smell) so maybe there is a common solution im not privy to ? or maybe a guide is in order?
