So I'm one of those people who hated vista as soon as I got it. Well now that XP SP3 has been crapping itself with frequent blue screens, I thought it was time to finally upgrade. This year I downloaded server 2008 standard x64 from MSDN and I installed it a few weeks ago. Unfortunately not all my hardware was compatible. Since creative fails at supporting its older sound cards I was forced to use my on board sound card. :(

Surprisingly my on board sound card preforms better in server 08 than my sound blaster in XP. I can hear all of the background noises in GRID now and the graphics are a lot more smoother now that I can use direct X 10. :D

Besides the sound card incompatibility (Creatives fault) I have had no problems with the OS. I already had a lot of alternatives to my applications when I installed vista in the past, so no problems with compatibility for me. :D

So if you're one of the people that still thinks that Vista sucks hard, consider trying out Server 2008 standard edition.

If you think vista sucks i would recomend playing around with its settings for half an hour and disable all the stuff you hate.

If you hate vista so much that you wont even touch it i would recomend waiting 6-10 months for windows 7 to be released.

While server 2008 might work for some people it lacks services in some areas means that means you wont be able to do everything you might do with a xp machine and it costs alot more than vista.

Very good point.

I'm using Vista Ult x64, and its great. I built a custom install disk using vLite.

Ive also dual booted Windows 7 Build 6801 x86, and its alot better than Vista already, in terms of speed and ram usage.

ghostly is there a way that i can purchase a legit copy of that disc for use in a build? it would have to be licensed though and capable of live updates.
oh and ghostman he directly refers to being able to use directx 10 =]

spoon man i wish i knew more about os like 6 -8 months ago.
i used vista on a new machine before the owner even did, and i like the look and feel of it. i was a bit lost as far as control navigation, but i only had the machine for about four hours. i am pretty sure with more time i would have liked vista.

Abusiv3, my disk has alot of custom drivers also, so the only thing I have to install(as far as drivers) is the lastest nvidia gfx driver. Because of this, it will only work on my computer 100% proper.

If you was to get a copy of Vista, I would easily make you a disk that cuts out the crap that you don't need, turns off services that arent needed, and also put some essential programs on the disk for install after the windows install is done(Firefox, DirectX update, things like that)

Server 08 supports direct x 10, and you can install any missing services later. It's also based on an entirely different kernel so it runs a lot more smoother and stable. I got access to msdn, so I got a legal copy for free :D

Heya Slider, PM me with all the info for your machine that you are building(mobo make/model, what cards you will be using, all that info, except the Video card) and I will make you a disk. I can actualy make the ISO and send it to you, so you can burn it to DVD yourself.

you know, Abusiv3, I would gladly make you a few custom disks for sending me that xbox. I can do XP, Vista, and possibly 2K(BIG if.)

wow really? well im currently running xp home with sp3. it just started getting glitchy like three days ago. it could be my pc though. my hotmail isnt letting me open email (on any account) and my fiance has this blackboard site she goes to to see her classwork and it wont let java run. even more annoying, it will not let my AVG or Lavasoft update.

basically, it would be a great time to rip my os out and wipe my drive.

i had held off for a second on shipping the xbox as my cousin told me at the last second he might be willing to donate a fully working one. (came up while he was here and i was staring at four debating which to send lol. prior to him you were getting one without a power supply or case lol. now youll get a "fully".

back to the os lol
i think that i should upgrade the mobo. as good as my biostar is, it really was just a replacement. it runs my beautiful ddr2 corsair xms at freaking 667 =[ so, if you can make me a no nonsense os, i think i will upgrade my mobo and processor. i have a ridiculously large pile of aluminum scrap in my pickup so im sure it wont be tough to talk the wife into letting me buy them (Asus-P5K and your Q6600 should work).

ok. lets really think this out so we can minimize shipping. i can send you the xbox and some unnamed (in this message) items for the "other" project =] then i guess you can send me a disc and your lil case. then i can send you back your case (painted) and i can send you some more "items". obviously the more we bulk up the better, its all light stuff.

Just dont get the ASUS P5K SE. The heatsink on the northbridge sucks and i had to put a fan on it, held down with Zip ties(was mine, but the P5K SE is now in my wife's computer.) the P5K series is a great board, just dont get the P5K SE, its more of a budget board, as well as the northbridge getting hot.

As for the xbox, thats AWESOME, it even furthers my plan for my next project!

As far as the OS disks, I can make those for you, but it would be best if done for the new machine. That was I can integrate the drivers into the OS disk, so all you have to do is install the Video drivers. Its very nice.

As far as the unnamed items, thats cool. I just hope its assembled. :P

hahahaha ok
yeah i will steer clear of the fore mentioned mobo.
thanks for the heads up, i remembered discussing it in more detail a few months ago

xbox= glad it makes you

os discs= im thinking new mobo ,new cpu IS a new pc lol, no?
this thing need to be "restrung"
im so stupid when it comes to programming and software... i have a dvd burner i cant burn dvd's with; nevermind that i cant even watch a dvd on my pc. i cant convert to mp3 and make mp3 cd's. i feel like thats just the tip of the iceberg and im missing a lot of my pc's potential.

"items"= yes, unassembled and requiring some guidance from you. im wondering if a phone call at this point might be easiest lol. im not shy. and i have free long distance at certain points of the day.

Slider: do you think you are prepared to receive anything for our project?
