Subject: MOTW #10 Telecalculograph Mk II
Posted By: cantstraferightPosted on: 2009-05-27

I'm a very big fan of steampunk. I love steampunk movies, games, comics but especially love all the steampunk mods that are appearing on the net over the past couple of years.
So I especially love this weeks Mod Of The Week.

This mod was made by modder Jake-of-all-trades (not to be confused with the steampunk modder Jake Von Slatt) at the request of Blue Omega Entertainment to celebrate the release of the steampunk game Damnation for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.

Telecalculograph Mk II looks more like it belongs in a brewery than on a desk at home. So it may surprise you to learn that the case started life as a Silverstone TJ04. Every inch of this case has been modified to give the case a steam punk look and the and the small details like the plunger used to turn the computer on show how much effort has gone into the smallest of details.

I especially love the gauges mounted on the front of the case and the iris type shutter that hides the usb, mic/headphones and eSata ports on the front.

Specifications
Intel Core i7 965
12GB DDR3 RAM
X57 chipset motherboard
Dual Radeon 4870X2 card
1 TB hard drive

Worklog
All I could find work log wise was two videos

If you really like this mod and would like to own it you should head over to Destructoid because they are holding competition where you can win this amazing case as well as the computer inside it.

Subject: New computer ships with WoW account-stealing software
Posted By: cantstraferightPosted on: 2009-05-25

Recently a brand new M&A Companion Touch (A tablet based computer aimed at students) was found to have World of Warcraft account stealing software. There was also a a rootkit and password-stealing program all pre installed on the new tablet and to make things worse it was all designed to spread from computer to computer using USB devices.

This was only discovered because one of the people that had purchased one of these tablets ran a virus scanner as soon as they got it.

So how did this happen?
Before M&A sent out their laptops they update the drivers and the software using a USB drive which in this case was infected with the worm. because of this who knows how many of their systems could be infected.

As a follow up to last month History of CPU's Maximum PC has put together a history of 3D graphics hardware article.

You can find the article here:
http://www.maximumpc.....ospective?page=0%2C0

The articles pretty interesting but I didn't see a lot of those cards because I went from a generic VGA card to a nVidia TNT2 model 64 to a Geforce 5200, missing out a lot of cards between them.

Subject: Terminator Salvation for the PC recalled
Posted By: cantstraferightPosted on: 2009-05-21

After a lot of complainants from users not able to install Terminator Salvation on their PC's, the physical copies (not the downloadable version) are being recalled.

Evolved Games had this to say on their forums

Unfortunately a defect occurred during replication of the PC version of Terminator Salvation, which does not allow end users to install the game. The downloadable online PC versions, Xbox 360, PS3, are not affected and function properly. We have recalled all PC copies of Terminator Salvation from retail in North America and are currently in the process of replicating new copies. The new copies will be on store shelves in a few days. A replacement plan for all end users that purchased the defective units is currently being set up. Details to get a replacement copy will be announced shortly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused the end users that purchased the defective copy.

So if you have a copy of the game for the PC that's not been working right , you are not alone.

Just a quick post this week because I don't have a lot of time.

This excellent water cooled desk computer mod was made by Glenn Derene, editor of technology at Popular mechanics.

Overall this is a nice clean and simple mod that really does look good as well as being a powerful computer.

Subject: Dell to make Via Nano based servers
Posted By: cantstraferightPosted on: 2009-05-20

Last week in the Super Secret Awesome Fusionmods Staff Section of the forum Gh0sTly brought up his dream of server boards with 60 Via Nano cpu's on them. Well it appears that Dell has been spying on us because they have announced plans to make servers based on Via's Nano CPU's

Now they haven't quite cracked the whole putting 60 CPU's on the one board but to make up for it these servers will be so small that you can fit 12 in the space you would normally store one 3.5" rack mount server.

The new servers will be called Dell XS11-VX8's (codename Fortuna) and will consume only 30w of power with each one contain a 1.6ghz Via Nano CPU making them perfect for being web servers.

Subject: Duke Nukem not gone forever
Posted By: cantstraferightPosted on: 2009-05-20

3D Realm, which recently appeared to have closed down without finishing the newest game in the Duke Nukem series have released a statement confirming that they are still around but were forced to let the developers of Duke Nukem Forever go because of financial reasons.

"3D Realms Release – Pertaining to Recent Events Surrounding Duke Nukem Forever
Dallas, TX (May 18, 2009) – In light of recent press articles and statements by Take-Two (to the media and in a lawsuit), we want to set the record straight on some issues.

Despite rumors and statements to the contrary, 3D Realms (3DR) has not closed and is not closing. 3DR retains ownership of the Duke Nukem franchise. Due to lack of funding, however, we are saddened to confirm that we let the Duke Nukem Forever (DNF) development team go on May 6th, while we regroup as a company. While 3DR is a much smaller studio now, we will continue to operate as a company and continue to license and co-create games based upon the Duke Nukem franchise.

As some of you may know, Take-Two filed a lawsuit last week containing various accusations and claims against 3DR and the uncompleted DNF game. Take-Two never paid 3DR advances or any signing bonus or any other funds related to DNF, up until July 2008, at which time they paid $2.5m in connection with another agreement for an unannounced game. This is the sum total Take-Two has paid 3DR in connection with DNF. Take-Two claims that they paid $12m to GT Interactive/Infogrames to acquire the publishing rights for the DNF game. To be clear, 3DR was not a party to that transaction and did not receive any money from it. When the DNF game was originally signed with GT Interactive in 1998, GT paid 3DR a $400,000 signing bonus. Up until July 2008, this was the only publisher money we received for the DNF game. Meanwhile, 3DR put over $20m into the production of DNF.

Take-Two retains publishing rights for the DNF game, although 3DR retains certain rights to sell the game directly to the public. Late last year, 3DR began negotiations with Take-Two to provide funding to complete the DNF game. In the meantime, 3DR was hitting mutually-agreed milestones, despite not having a new agreement finalized. Take-Two was well aware that 3DR needed the funding to continue the DNF game development. Suddenly, after months of negotiations, Take-Two materially changed the parameters of the proposed funding agreement. 3DR informed Take-Two that it could not financially afford the changes Take-Two was suggesting and would be forced to release the team if an agreement was not reached. Take-Two made a last minute proposal to acquire the Duke Nukem franchise and the 3DR development team. Take-Two's proposal was unacceptable to 3DR for many reasons, including no upfront money, no guarantee minimum payment, and no guarantee to complete the DNF game. From 3DR's perspective, we viewed Take-Two as trying to acquire the Duke Nukem franchise in a "fire sale." Those negotiations fell through on May 4th, a deal never materialized, and the DNF team was sadly released a few days later.

Less than a week after the DNF team was released, Take-Two filed its lawsuit in New York, seeking immediate temporary injunctive relief. The court denied Take-Two's request for a temporary restraining order. While we cannot comment on the details of the ongoing lawsuit, we believe Take-Two's lawsuit is without merit and merely a bully tactic to obtain ownership of the Duke Nukem franchise. We will vigorously defend ourselves against this publisher."

So there is still hope that this game will see the light of day.
